Grade 9 Creative Arts — Music (CAPS) 2027
Designed for Grade 9 learners taking Creative Arts: Music within the CAPS curriculum, this workbook provides a structured, engaging and progressive approach to the development of music literacy, listening, practical understanding and creative musical skills.
Grade 9 is an important transition year. Learners are expected to consolidate the knowledge and skills developed in earlier Creative Arts work while becoming increasingly independent in the way they listen to, read, interpret, create and perform music.
The workbook therefore integrates key areas such as:
- rhythm and metre;
- pitch and notation;
- musical terminology;
- listening and aural awareness;
- score reading;
- form and structure;
- instruments and musical styles;
- practical application;
- improvisation and composition; and
- reflection on music within different cultural and social contexts.
A strong emphasis is placed on learning through actual music. Concepts are introduced and reinforced through meaningful musical examples so that learners can connect what they hear, see, perform and understand.
The workbook supports cumulative learning throughout the year. New concepts are introduced progressively, while earlier work is regularly revisited and integrated into more complex activities. This helps learners develop a connected understanding of music rather than treating each topic as an isolated unit.
The 2027 edition reflects the ScoreS2Duo approach to music literacy:
hear it → experience it → recognise it → understand it → apply it.
Learners are encouraged not only to remember musical facts, but to use their knowledge in practical, creative and interpretive ways.
The workbook is suitable for use:
- as a classroom workbook throughout the Grade 9 year;
- for individual or group activities;
- for structured practice and revision;
- as support for learners with different levels of prior musical experience; and
- as preparation for learners who may continue with Music as a Subject in the FET phase.
The aim is to provide both teachers and learners with a clear and manageable pathway through Grade 9 Creative Arts: Music while keeping musical knowledge connected to listening, performance, creativity and real musical experience.
