Repertoire-Based Music Literacy Education (RBMLE) is an approach to music learning that begins with music itself. Instead of teaching musical concepts mainly through isolated exercises, RBMLE uses meaningful repertoire as the starting point for developing musical understanding. Learners encounter concepts through listening, movement, performance, notation, interpretation, creativity and reflection, allowing different aspects of musicianship to develop together rather than separately. RBMLE recognises that learners often bring existing musical knowledge with them — from songs they know, music they perform, community traditions and everyday musical experiences.
