Grade 11 Music as a Subject — Section A: Music Literacy (CAPS) 2027

Designed for Grade 11 learners taking Music as a Subject within the CAPS curriculum, this workbook provides a structured and progressive approach to the Music Literacy requirements of Section A.

The Grade 11 year plays an important bridging role between the foundational work of Grade 10 and the higher level of independence expected in Grade 12. This workbook therefore focuses on consolidating existing knowledge while introducing increasingly complex music-literacy concepts in a carefully sequenced way.

Learners work through key areas such as notation, rhythm, pitch, scales and keys, intervals, chords, terminology, score reading, analysis and the application of theoretical knowledge within musical examples.

A strong emphasis is placed on understanding music in context. Concepts are not treated only as isolated theory exercises, but are connected to actual musical material so that learners can begin to see how written theory functions within the music they hear, read and perform.

The workbook also supports cumulative learning. Previously introduced concepts are revisited regularly so that learners continue to retrieve and apply earlier knowledge while new work is added.
