Grade 10 Music as a Subject — Section A: Music Literacy (CAPS) 2027

Designed for Grade 10 learners taking Music as a Subject within the CAPS curriculum, this workbook provides a structured, accessible and progressive approach to the Music Literacy requirements of Section A.

Grade 10 marks the beginning of the FET phase and lays the foundation for the more advanced music-literacy work that follows in Grades 11 and 12. The workbook therefore helps learners consolidate core knowledge, address possible gaps from earlier learning and build new concepts in a carefully sequenced way.

Learners work through key areas of music literacy, including notation, rhythm, pitch, scales and keys, intervals, chords, terminology, score reading, analysis and the application of theoretical knowledge within musical examples.

An important focus of the workbook is to connect theory with actual music. Learners are not simply asked to memorise rules and terms, but to understand how musical concepts sound, how they appear in notation and how they function within a musical context.

The workbook is also designed around cumulative learning. New work is introduced step by step, while earlier concepts are regularly revisited and retrieved. In this way, learners develop a more integrated understanding of music rather than a collection of disconnected theory topics.
