Grade 12 Music as a Subject — Section A: Music Literacy (CAPS) 2027

Designed specifically for Grade 12 Music as a Subject learners following CAPS, this workbook provides a structured, progressive approach to the Music Literacy requirements of Section A.

The workbook supports learners as they consolidate and apply the musical knowledge developed throughout the FET phase, with particular emphasis on understanding concepts within musical context rather than as isolated theory exercises.

Learners work systematically through the core areas of music literacy, including notation, rhythm, pitch, scales and keys, intervals, chords, terminology, score reading, analysis and the application of theoretical knowledge to musical examples.

A strong emphasis is placed on integration and examination readiness. Concepts are revisited cumulatively, combined in increasingly complex tasks and applied to the kinds of musical thinking expected at Grade 12 level.

Rather than preparing learners simply to recognise theoretical facts, the workbook encourages them to read, interpret, reason about and apply musical information with increasing independence.

The 2027 edition reflects the ScoreS2Duo approach to music literacy:

understand the concept → recognise it in music → practise it → apply it → retrieve it again.

It is suitable for use:

• as a classroom workbook throughout the Grade 12 year;
