This RBMLE Repertoire Study uses Melody Bober’s Stealth Mode as the musical context through which learners develop music literacy, musicianship, practice skills and performance confidence.

Designed for Grade 1 piano learners, with music-literacy content at approximately Pre-Grade 1 to Grade 1 level, the workbook moves beyond isolated theory exercises by connecting notation, aural work, rhythm, technique, interpretation, improvisation, analysis and performance directly to the repertoire being studied.

At the heart of the workbook is Repertoire-Based Music Literacy Education (RBMLE), an approach in which repertoire becomes a vehicle for learning rather than simply the final product of study. Learners engage with music through eight interconnected dimensions: Hearing; Feeling and Experiencing; Identifying; Reading and Representing; Interpreting; Reasoning and Applying; Creating; and Communicating and Performing.

The learning journey is structured through five developmental stages:

Stage 1 – Explore and Understand
Learners become familiar with the music, notation, character and musical ideas.

Stage 2 – Practise and Improve
Identified difficulties are addressed through focused and deliberate practice.

Stage 3 – Analyse and Perform at Home
Learners begin integrating the piece and practise performing in a low-pressure environment.

Stage 4 – Create and Perform
Greater fluency allows attention to shift towards interpretation, expression and musical communication.

Stage 5 – Public Performance
Learners prepare to perform with confidence, adaptability and reflective awareness in a concert, examination, eisteddfod, competition or recital.

The workbook also introduces two practical learning tools:

The Three Ps – Practising, Playing and Performing, helping learners understand the different purposes of each activity, and the 3S Practice Strategy – Separate, Slow and Small, which gives learners practical ways to solve problems during practice.

Throughout the study, learners are encouraged to listen, reflect, improvise, analyse, make musical decisions and evaluate their own progress. The final performance section brings the learning journey together through reflective questions and an Eight Dimensions of Music Literacy checklist.
